If you hold ITIL 4 Foundation, you don’t need to retake it – ITIL 5 Foundation is a new certification, not an automatic upgrade. If you hold ITIL 4 Managing Professional, a transition module is expected to provide a streamlined upgrade path in 2026. Your ITIL 4 certifications remain valid, although ongoing professional development is encouraged. The question isn’t whether to upgrade eventually – it’s when.
If you’ve invested time and money in ITIL 4 certification, you’re probably asking the same question everyone in the ITSM community is asking right now: do I need to start over?
The answer is no. But “no, you don’t need to start over” is not the same as “nothing changes for you.” ITIL 5 introduces meaningful updates, and practitioners who want to stay current and credible, will engage with it. The question is how and when.
This article breaks down what’s different, what carries over, and your specific options depending on where you are in your ITIL 4 journey.
What's actually different in ITIL 5
ITIL 4 organised service management around 34 practices and four dimensions. ITIL 5 builds on this foundation and reflects how IT organisations operate today – with increasing use of automation, AI-supported workflows, and digital products.
Rather than introducing an entirely new structure, ITIL 5 expands the framework through a set of modules covering areas such as:
| Area | Focus |
|---|---|
| Foundation | Core concepts — value, services, systems thinking |
| Experience | Service interactions, people, customer outcomes |
| Product | Digital product management, technology-enabled services |
| Service | Running, supporting, and improving IT services |
| Strategy | Governance, organisational direction, service strategy |
If you’ve done ITIL 4 Managing Professional, you’ll recognise much of the content covered in Experience, Service, and Strategy. If you’ve done ITIL 4 Strategic Leader, you’ll see overlap particularly in Strategy and Product. The knowledge is transferable- the framing is evolving.
Three shifts are worth understanding specifically:
AI is becoming part of everyday operations
ITIL 5 reflects environments where automation and AI-supported decision-making are increasingly present in service management. This includes areas such as incident triage, request handling, and change evaluation.
As a result, there is a stronger emphasis on governing AI-enabled services, understanding how they operate, monitoring outcomes, and ensuring they align with organisational policies.
Products, not just processes
ITIL 4 already introduced a service value perspective. ITIL 5 continues this direction by placing more emphasis on digital products – how services are designed, delivered, and evolved as part of a broader product lifecycle.
For teams already managing service catalogues and user experience, this will feel like a natural progression rather than a complete shift.
Value is co-created in practice
Value co-creation was introduced in ITIL 4 through the Service Value System. ITIL 5 continues to develop this idea, with more focus on real interactions between teams, users, and outcomes – particularly in the Experience-related modules.
Your options depending on your current qualification
You hold ITIL 4 Foundation only
Your ITIL 4 Foundation certification remains valid and recognised.
If you want to engage with ITIL 5, the starting point is ITIL 5 Foundation. It is a new certification rather than a direct upgrade — meaning you are expanding your profile rather than replacing your existing qualification.
ITIL 5 Foundation was released in February 2026 (according to PeopleCert announcements).
Whether you take it now or later depends on your role. If you’re actively working in ITSM delivery or process design, adding ITIL 5 Foundation this year is a reasonable step. If you’re in a more adjacent role, observing how the framework evolves further is also a valid approach.
You hold ITIL 4 Managing Professional
This is the most direct upgrade path.
A transition module is expected to be introduced in 2026, designed to bridge ITIL 4 Managing Professional to the updated ITIL 5 framework.
This is expected to mean:
- You do not retake the existing ITIL 4 Managing Professional modules
- You complete a focused module covering key differences and updates
- You achieve an updated ITIL 5-aligned Managing Professional standing
Our recommendation: consider planning this for later in 2026, once the full ITIL 5 module set is available and supporting materials have matured.
You hold ITIL 4 Strategic Leader
The Strategy-related content in ITIL 5 overlaps with areas covered in ITIL 4 Strategic Leader.
At the time of writing, no dedicated Strategic Leader transition path has been formally published. Monitor PeopleCert updates for further clarification as the framework rollout continues.
You hold ITIL 4 Foundation + partial MP modules
If you’ve completed some, but not all, ITIL 4 Managing Professional modules, you have two main options:
- Complete the ITIL 4 Managing Professional track and then transition
- Move directly into ITIL 5 modules
The most efficient path depends on how far you’ve progressed and how your organisation values ITIL 5. It’s worth discussing this with your training provider before committing.
A note on timing
The ITIL 5 rollout is happening in phases throughout 2026.
Foundation-level certification is already available, with additional modules being introduced progressively across the year.
There is no immediate urgency to rush. ITIL 4 continues to be recognised and used. However, the ecosystem training providers, materials, and employer expectations is gradually shifting.
Planning your path early allows you to move deliberately rather than react later.
How RixMind can help
At RixMind, we work with IT teams to map their current ITIL qualifications to the most efficient next step, whether that means Foundation, module-based progression, or preparing for a transition module.
We offer ITIL 5 Foundation training and support for further modules, with a focus on practical understanding, not just certification.
Our approach separates training from certification allowing teams to learn together while certifying only selected roles, reducing both cost and operational disruption.
We also offer one-to-one sessions for practitioners who want clarity before committing to a specific path.
